February 21, 2024, LANCASTER, TX--In acknowledgment of her commitment to educational equity, Dr. A. K. Perera, Superintendent of Lancaster Independent School District (LISD), has been honored with the 2024 Open Up Resources Excellence in Equity Leadership Award. The distinction recognizes leaders in public education who champion equity for all students and singles out a leader who has shown a significant and successful focus on classroom equity initiatives.
Dr. Perera's national recognition results from her intentional stakeholder engagement, which has driven transformative changes benefiting students, staff, and the Lancaster ISD community. Her advocacy for equity, inclusion, access, capacity building, and equal opportunities for all students is a testament to her leadership. Most notably in Lancaster ISD, Perera and her team have been instrumental in advancing the district's 'STEM for all' mission, evolving it into a comprehensive 'STEAM for all' approach. The mission now encompasses science, technology, engineering, arts, math, service, teaching, entrepreneurship, athletics, and manufacturing. Dr. Perera's vision and strategic focus ensure that the skills needed for success in STEM fields are integrated across all disciplines, making them accessible to every student.
Lancaster ISD Board President Marion Hamilton attended the Open Up Resources reception honoring Dr. Perera and witnessed her recognition by fellow educational leaders.
