TIGER STEAM CAMP

June 17, 2024, Lancaster ISD/Lancaster, TX -- Lancaster ISD STEAM Camp is the place to be! STEAM Camp is available to 3rd- 8th graders who are interested in learning about Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.

This camp focuses on an array of topics that focus on topics students may already know while exposing them to new areas, as well. These topics include yoga, dance, and social skills that aim to create well-rounded individuals.

Miesha Medford, STEAM Camp Principal, celebrates her third year leading this learning experience. During the school year, Medford serves as Assistant Principal at Rolling Hills Elementary School. She looks forward to this camp every year.

Medford believes that the most important thing students will gain from this camp is exposure to new interests. “I believe our students are going to be able to not only embrace what they’re learning here, but be able to share that with their families, with their friends, and when they go back during the school year they’re able to share the experience with their teachers,” Medford states.

Principal Medford believes that this camp is not only a good opportunity for students but teachers, as well. During this camp, teachers can facilitate instead of being responsible for teaching, allowing teachers to learn new strategies to take back to the classroom. In addition, teachers genuinely enjoy this camp, specifically participating in the activities with the students.

First-grade teacher, Shayna Beavers, agrees that this camp is extremely beneficial providing students with applicable skills such as teamwork, gardening, as well as maintaining active lifestyles. Beavers has personally enjoyed learning and helping teach gardening skills.

Additionally, students have had an opportunity to learn about different pathways for the future. Aubrina, a rising eighth-grader planning to attend Lancaster Middle School, is currently in the pursuit of determining what she would like to study after high school. She says that she is exploring her options, but she enjoyed learning about drones. “We coded and flew the drones. We were getting them through obstacles and races,” said Aubriana. She believes that this camp is refreshing and appreciates the opportunity to get out of the house this summer.

Medford thanks Lancaster ISD for hosting this free camp to grow their students. “I believe that’s a big thing and this camp and everything they learn is going to help them to be successful not only during the school year but in their life as well,” Medford reflects.

Lancaster ISD is preparing students for the next level. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of this free resource for their students and be on the lookout for more summer learning opportunities to come.
