Mavs Academy visits RPM

January 13, 2025, Lancaster ISD/Lancaster, TX -- Excitement filled the gymnasium at Rosa Parks/Millbrook Elementary School as fourth and fifth grade students had the unique opportunity to learn basketball skills from the Dallas Mavericks' Mavs Academy team. The event, which focused on the fundamentals of basketball, provided a fun and engaging environment for students to practice shooting, ball handling, passing, and the triple-threat position.

Ronard Patton, Senior Manager of Mavs Academy and Player Relations for the Dallas Mavericks, led the event and praised the students’ enthusiasm and effort.

“I love their energy. They’re so excited,” Patton shared. “Some of them have a lot of experience with basketball, and some have never done it before. But for them to come out, try, and give a great effort—that’s all we ask.”

The one-day program catered to students with varying levels of basketball experience. Whether seasoned players or first-timers, each student embraced the opportunity to improve their skills under the guidance of experienced coaches.

For Patton and the Mavs Academy team, the joy of working with students is deeply personal.

“It takes you back to your childhood,” Patton explained. “I remember how much fun it was to play basketball growing up. I remember the coaches who invested in us and made it an experience I’ll never forget. To now be able to offer that to these kids is like a dream come true.”

Beyond basketball, the Mavs Academy team emphasized the life lessons the sport can teach, which is taught daily throughout Lancaster ISD. Patton highlighted the importance of hard work, confidence, and listening.

“Everything you do on the court translates into the classroom, at home, and eventually into your job. Listening, communicating, and trying hard are lessons we want them to take with them,” he said.
