Humphrey

July 3, 2023 LANCASTER, Texas--After more than three decades at the helm of the Lancaster High School girls track program, Lancaster ISD Chief of Athletics, Beverly D. Humphrey has announced her retirement from Lancaster Independent School District.

During her tenure as Lancaster's head girls track coach, Humphrey built a nationally known powerhouse track program that has produced several district, regional, and state championships. In addition, several student-athletes have received scholarships to continue their academics and athletic careers at the collegiate level.

Humphrey joined Lancaster ISD in 1988 as a physical education teacher and head girls volleyball and track coach. For several years, Humphrey saw success in both sports programs; however, her high school track and field achievements have solidified her status as the winningest track and field coach in Texas. Under Humphrey's leadership, her teams won 13 UIL state track and field titles and created the winning culture within Lancaster ISD. In addition to the state titles, she has also won 18 UIL Regional, nine UIL Area, and 35 district championship titles, with 32 consecutive. She has also received countless awards, accolades, and honors throughout her coaching career, which include her induction into the Texas Sports Black Hall of Fame, the Texas Track and Field Hall of Fame, the Texas Girls Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and the Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association Hall of Honor.

In 2004, Humphrey was named the district’s athletic director, overseeing all aspects of athletic programs. She provided direction and supervision to the district's coaching staff, and at the time of her naming, she was one of the few female athletic directors in Texas.

"Coach Humphrey leaves an indelible mark on high school track and field. Her winning legacy is a testament to her unwavering dedication and tireless efforts within Lancaster ISD's athletic program. Her retirement is truly the end of an era, and she should be proud." Lancaster ISD Superintendent Dr. Katrise Perera expressed. "I witnessed her ability to inspire and guide our student-athletes with her exceptional coaching prowess and unmatched passion. Her pursuit of excellence has set a standard that will continue to inspire future generations of athletes and coaches. We wholeheartedly support her decision to embark on this well-deserved retirement, and we wish her the very best as she embraces closing this chapter of her career and embarking on new adventures."

Lancaster ISD will begin its search for a director of athletics immediately.
