TIGER BASKETBALL CAMP

June 05, 2024, Lancaster ISD/Lancaster, TX -- With summer officially kicking off Lancaster ISD is already working with students to enhance their sports skills. Lancaster ISD hosted its annual Basketball Hoop Camp where students of all ages arrived and excitedly took instruction from the many coaches eager to teach them.

This camp was created by Assistant Athletic Director and Head Boys Basketball Coach, Ferrin Douglas. It was created when Douglas returned to the district in 2007. When asked about the importance of this camp Coach Douglas talked about the impact this camp has on the community. “[It is important] to let the young kids know that the high school coaches definitely care about their development.” In addition, he stated that he wants to teach skills and drills that students can work on at home.

Coach Douglas believes that events, such as these, make champions, recounting having students participate in this camp ten years ago that are now on the Tigers Boys Basketball Team. This shows that by preparing our youth, they can go on to accomplish amazing feats.

Kyla Cooper, a point guard for the LHS Girl’s Basketball team, says that this program not only helps the younger students but inspires herself and her peers, as well. “I think it’s a great experience for us and the participants. I feel like it’s helped me with my coaching skills being able to be patient with the younger kids.” Cooper stated that one of the biggest takeaways she received was witnessing the younger students having fun showcasing their strong love for the game.

The future is bright for our younger student-athletes here in Lancaster ISD. Even outside the traditional school year, they are living up to the district motto – Inspire. Empower. Roar.
