April 25, 2025, Lancaster ISD/Lancaster, TX -- Lancaster High School rolled out the red carpet and had students lace up their sneakers for a night to remember at its annual prom held exclusively for students receiving special education services. This year’s theme was Sneaker Ball. The event, held in the Lancaster High School Black Box theatre, blended glitz and glam with comfort and community in an inclusive celebration for students of all abilities.
Students received the full VIP treatment before the event thanks to the Lancaster High School Cosmetology and Barbering department, which provided haircuts, hair styling, makeup, and nail services to prom attendees.
“It makes the students feel so good,” said Special Education teacher assistant Frankie Wigfall. “Getting pampered allows them to have the full experience of getting ready for prom.”
The experience gave students the chance to feel confident and celebrated, while also allowing their peers in career and technical education programs to showcase their skills.
Lancaster High School's Culinary Arts department prepared and served delicious entrees and refreshments throughout the evening, turning the prom into a full-service event curated by students, for students.
“Our students prepared barbecue chicken, brisket, ribs, loaded baked potatoes, and baked beans,” said Culinary Arts teacher LaTina Dawn. “The students will also serve in their chef attire.”
The LHS Sneaker Ball was designed with sensory-friendly features, including softer lighting, a quiet room for students needing a break, and carefully chosen music to ensure everyone felt comfortable.
“I remember when I started working in Lancaster ISD, there were a few students who wanted to go to prom, they paid and attended, but unfortunately, they didn’t have the opportunity to stay,” said Wigfall.
In 2018, Wigfall approached prom organizer Roshanda Bonner to intentionally rewrite that story, ensuring every student had the support, accommodations, and opportunity to participate and enjoy the night.
"This event wasn’t just about throwing a dance, it was about creating a moment where every student felt seen, valued, and included," said Bonner.
The prom is now an event that students look forward to attending and celebrating as a key moment during the school year. Additionally, the highlight is the prom king and queen announcement that brings cheers and even a few happy tears.
This year, that moment came when Ka’Darius Henderson and LaShawn Randolph Thornton were crowned king and queen. Their faces were beaming with joy as their fellow students, teachers, and family members gave a standing ovation.
“I was so excited and I was so nervous,” stated Randaolph Thornton, adding that being crowned prom queen made her feel beautiful and celebrated.
From the red carpet to the dance floor, the Sneaker Ball represented Lancaster ISD’s commitment to inclusive education, student empowerment, and community connection.
