Lancaster ISD Special Olympics Bowling Tournament

November 19, 2024, Lancaster ISD/Lancaster, TX-- Lancaster ISD hosted its inaugural Special Olympics bowling tournament on Tuesday, November 19, with more than 100 student-athletes from the district. The event promoted sportsmanship, and friendly competition, targeting Lancaster ISD students in grades three through twelve.

Special Olympics is a global movement promoting acceptance and inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through events like the bowling tournament, Lancaster ISD proudly joins this mission, creating opportunities for its students to succeed both in and out of the classroom.

“These Special Olympics events cater to the needs of our special education students,” said Executive Director of Special Education, Crystal Cromer. “Our adaptive PE coach prepares them for each event so that they can showcase what they have learned during the school day.”

The day began with excitement as parents, Lancaster ISD staff, Lancaster High School Student Council, and the Lancaster Varsity Boys Basketball team gathered to celebrate the achievements of the Olympians. For many participants, this event marked a culmination of weeks of preparation during adaptive physical education classes.

“We talk about bowling in class and practice during our adaptive PE gym time,” explained Eddie Bratton, Lancaster ISD Adaptive PE teacher.

For some students, the tournament was their first experience with bowling, making their success even more special.

“This was his first time bowling, and he won first place,” shared Lancaster High School parent, Denice Pierson. “His teachers this year have been a tremendous help in his growth.”

The event was a celebration of the athletes’ abilities and a testament to the strength of the Lancaster ISD community. Parents expressed gratitude for the district’s efforts in creating meaningful opportunities for their children.

“He was ready to show up and show out,” said parent Emmanuel Kemp about his child’s enthusiasm for the tournament. “All of the teachers have been wonderful. Seeing the students work together and have fun has made this a wonderful occasion.”

As the tournament concluded with medals and smiles, it was clear this was just the beginning for Lancaster ISD’s Special Olympics events.

“This event is about more than just sports; it’s about creating an environment where every student feels valued and celebrated,” said Cromer.

Lancaster ISD’s inaugural Special Olympics bowling tournament was a great success and will be a district tradition in the future.
