LANCASTER, Texas -- It was an evening of accomplishment and success as four Lancaster High School seniors participated in the summer commencement exercises. The ceremony was held in the Lancaster High School auditorium and signified the completion of a significant milestone.
Lancaster High School counselor Meca Anderson opened the ceremony with a warm welcome to the graduates and congratulated them on their achievements. Chief of Student Services, Dr. Marcus Jackson, shared a special message, praised the graduates' resilience and perseverance, and encouraged them to change the world.
"It's been rough, tough, and plenty of other stuff," said Jackson. "You've shown a tremendous amount of grit. But know that this is only the beginning of your journey. You're now equipped with the tools of resiliency, resolve, and fortitude to be successful. Learn to appreciate failure, expect it, and grow from it."
Dr. Jackson also shared his three rules for life: listen, always try your best, and never give up.
Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Perera, encouraged the students to pursue their dreams and thanked the parents and teachers for their support and presence in their student's life.
"Today is a day you will always remember," said Dr. Perera. "I encourage you to cherish this moment and celebrate your accomplishments. Parents, families, and teachers should also be proud. The support you have provided along the way has helped our graduates reach their academic goals. Continuing and extending that support will be essential as they move on to the next stage of their lives."
Following the speeches, graduates were called up individually to receive their diplomas. Each graduate's name was announced, and they were greeted with cheers and applause from their loved ones in the audience. Graduates turned their tassels in celebration as the ceremony ended.
"I was nervous about graduating, but I'm excited to finish finally," said Victoria Velazquez. "I'm very thankful to be here. I had a lot going on during my life, but I had so many people standing behind me and helping me get through. I wouldn't be here without them, and I'm grateful for everything."
Senior Taniyah Cofield expressed similar sentiments.
"I'm very proud of myself for reaching this milestone. Sometimes I was doubtful, but I had the best support system, and I am thankful it helped me get to this point. I'm excited to be graduating," said Cofield.
Lancaster High School Principal Kirsten Jett shared well wishes as the students prepared for the next phase of their lives.
"I encourage the graduates to persevere and keep going," said Jett. "The journey doesn't look the same for everybody, but pushing through and striving for your goals is important. Use their experiences in high school and apply those lessons to their everyday lives."
For many graduates, the summer graduation ceremony marked the end of a chapter and the beginning of a new journey. Some will head to college, while others will enter the workforce or pursue other ventures. Whatever their paths, the LHS Class of 2023 can proudly say that 100% of their class graduated, and they all can reflect on their high school years and celebrate their accomplishments.
