Lancaster ISD Chief of Athletics and Head Girls Track and Field Coach Beverly D. Humphrey has been inducted into the prestigious Prairie View A&M University Sports Hall of Fame.
Humphrey and six other stand-out athletes were honored by their college alma mater and presented with their exclusive purple jackets on August 20, after COVID-19 delayed their enshrinement ceremony for one year.
"This is my fifth induction, but this one means the most to me," said Humphrey. "I found great success with my team while I was at Prairie View, and I know we set the bar for the teams that came after us. I am overwhelmed and proud to be honored by my former college. I give all of the credit to God and my mother, Florence D. Jones. I love you mom, we made it!"
Under legendary Coach Barbara Jacket, Humphrey was a two-time AIAW National Champion sprinter and two-time USTFF All-American for PVAMU women's track team, which dominated during the 1970s and 1980s.
In addition, Humphrey has been with Lancaster ISD for more than three decades. She's won 13 UIL state track and field titles and created the winning culture within the district. In addition to the state titles, Humphrey has also won 18 UIL Regional, 9 UIL Area, and 35 District Championship titles, with 32 being consecutive. She has also received countless awards, accolades, and honors throughout her coaching career.
Humphrey has also been inducted into the Texas Sports Black Hall of Fame, The Texas Track and Field Hall of Fame, The Texas Girls Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and The Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association Hall of Honor.
The Prairie View A&M University Sports Hall of Fame Induction ceremony classes are announced each year, and the class of 2020-2021 is the 34th class to be inducted.
Coach Humphrey's fellow inductees include Evans White (Men's Track and Field), Matthew Teague (Football), Victor Pegram (Football), John T. Cochran (Tennis), Glenn White (Bowling), and Michael Robertson (Baseball).
