LANCASTER, Texas -- Lancaster ISD would like to congratulate five Lancaster High School (LHS) and Lancaster Early College High School (LECHS) students for earning academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. The students earned this recognition because of their academic achievements in school and outstanding performance on the PSAT. They've accomplished these milestones during an immensely demanding period of their high school career.
LECHS students Miguel Myles, Taylor Adams, Angela Brown, Esteban de Hoyos, and LHS student Alexandria Wilks excelled in College Board assessments and schoolwork to receive these awards, which colleges use to identify academically competitive underrepresented students.
"It feels great to be recognized," said Myles. "Knowing that my scores were high enough to be awarded by the College Board makes me feel more confident in my academic performance."
"Being recognized is an honor. I feel motivated, and I know I'll get an even higher score when I take the PSAT again," said Brown.
In August 2022, the College Board awarded 62,000 students from across the country with academic honors out of more than 180,000 eligible to apply across all 50 states.
"I'm thankful for the resources I was given to prepare," said Adams. "The PSAT workbooks and the Khan Academy were very helpful in getting ready for the test.
The College Board National Recognition Programs grant underrepresented students academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications and connect students with universities across the country, helping them connect to colleges and stand out during the admissions process. In addition, colleges and scholarship programs identify students awarded National African American, Hispanic, Indigenous, and Rural/Small Town Recognition through College Board's student search service.
While the PSAT may feel overwhelming to some students, de Hoyos says it's all about controlling your nerves when taking the test.
"I recommend taking a few deep breaths before you start the test," said de Hoyos. "It's also good to practice time management to ensure you can complete the test sections within the given time."
Alexandria Wilks shared similar sentiments.
"Study hard, but don't be too hard on yourself. Believe in yourself and trust your instincts when selecting your answers," said Wilks.

The students were recognized during the Lancaster ISD Board Meeting on Wednesday, September 21, 2022.
Eligible students will be invited to apply for the College Board National Recognition Programs during their sophomore or junior year. They will be awarded at the beginning of the next school year. Students will receive their awards in time to include them on college and scholarship applications.
