LANCASTER, Texas -- Lancaster ISD is the first K-12 STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) district in Texas and continues to be a leader in STEAM education. To showcase student achievement in STEAM subjects and to increase parent knowledge and engagement, Lancaster ISD STEAM is hosting Family Code Night on Wednesday, December 14, 2022.

“In Lancaster ISD, we are developing scholars to become skilled in coding for future STEAM careers,” said Erica Butler, Lancaster ISD Secondary Science Academic Coordinator, and Title I STEAM Events Coordinator. “Computer science is a critical attribute we build in our elementary and secondary schools. We want parents to know what the students are learning and experience it for themselves. Family Code Night allows us to bring the classroom to the parents.”

Students from all Lancaster ISD campuses will participate in Family Code Night. The event will allow students, parents, and the Lancaster community to learn how to code and understand the importance of coding in STEAM careers. The event’s theme focuses on climate change and the environment.

During the event, families will participate in a Family Scavenger Hunt, which allows students and parents to implement coding to maneuver through different stations. Stations include the Hack 4 Earth Competition, where campus teams code their micro:bit to solve a climate change problem. Other stations will provide hands-on coding activities, interactive activities, a coding through gaming experience, a glow-in-the-dark room, and a CTE (Career and Technical Education) showcase. An awards ceremony will close out Family Code Night.

Additionally, each campus will create a basket centered around climate change, and event attendees will vote on their favorite. Lancaster ISD STEAM will give each basket to a family in the Lancaster community.

“It would not be possible to host Family Code Night and other STEAM events without the work of the STEAM committee and liaisons on each campus. Lancaster ISD STEAM works to ensure students graduate with experience in several technology fields, such as computer science, programming, and software development,” said Butler.

This community event is an opportunity for everyone to witness the great things happening with Lancaster ISD STEAM education. Chick-fil-A will be available, and the Lancaster Middle School PTA will offer concessions.

Family Code Night is Wednesday, December 14, 2022, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lancaster Middle School. For more information, please email ericabutler@lancasterisd.org.
